Internet Woes

le sigh, still without internet.

Well, I assume so at least, as I’m in the office.

Let me give you the rundown, see how stupid this all is.

  • got Primus(the company, not the band) to connect a real phone to the house
  • at the same time, the dry loop dsl went down
  • called Velcom tech support, they told me to contact sales to deal with that
  • called Sales the next day, they put in a request to Bell to add the DSL to my line, could take 5 business days
  • wait
  • wait
  • Call Bell Thursday, they don’t want anything to do with me as I’m going through a reseller
  • call Primus, they state that it should be resolved within 24 hours as apparently all they need to do is provide a line number or somethign
  • 22.5 hours later, call Primus again and they said that there was nothing left for them to do
  • Call Velcom support, there’s something wrong with the line, they put in an order with Bell
  • Call Sales again to see what’s what, they said that Bell said they can’t add DSL because there’s no slots left in the box
  • Dry loop is still there somewhere
  • Request was put in with Bell(before I called even) to see about converting Dry loop to normal DSL
  • This won’t happen because there’s a queue for internet on that box, so if the dry loop is removed, that slot could go to someone else
  • New slow *might* be available somewhere between a month to a year
  • Called Sales, told them to do nothing
  • Support still has a call out to see what’s up with the dry loop
  • Apparently Bell is still testing
  • Hatred for Bell, especially since I’m not even a customer, has gone to record heights

What I suspect happened is that, when the Bell dude came by last week to check why the line wasn’t working, did some funny business and buggered the whole thing up.

See, even when you leave Bell, you can’t really escape Bell.

And if you’re not a customer, Bell is in no rush to help you even though they’re the only people that can do anything about it.

Hate.

Bell.

and I’m out

Missed a day. Even forgot that I could cheat with twitter. But I missed a day regardless.

I could tell you that I have a good excuse, but it’s a decent excuse at best.

See, for the longest time, Tara and I didn’t have a real phone line. Or at least it feels that way. Tara had a work blackberry that she could make all her long distance calls on and all was good. Then Tara changed jobs, we dropped Vonage(because it sucked) and had the need for a phone line with good long distance.

So we went with Primus, because at $50, it had it all. We’ll see. Anyway, because we didn’t have a real phone line, we had a dry loop dsl. But now we have a real phone line, it changed from a dry loop…which killed the dry dsl, which killed the internets!

Or at least our internets. And I called today,  and I’ve been told that it will take 5 days to resolve.

5 business days. Without the internets. This could go poorly.

I’ll keep you updated…via twitter. Or at least at work.

Lists

Tara is downstairs getting a make up test done, so I have to sit the animals.

What better way to do that than to make lists of things that I want for Christmas!

Only problem is, I’ve been at it for an hour…and I have 4 things.

Two of which are kinda the same.

I have this problem a lot actually. I want a lot of things, but whenever anyone asks me, I draw a blank.

And when I sit down to think about it, I become kinda pragmatic, and never pick things that could just be fun/silly/pretty useless.

So I’m trying to distract myself and open up to newer different things.

And it’s working like a charm because now I’m not only not thinking about it, I’m blogging that I’m not thinking about it.

I think I lost.

I look around my office, and I stuff just here, stuff that I might notice missing, but probably not.

And I ask myself, do I want more of that, or something I might use?

A Wii would be nice.

I think that if I clean my desk, I could probably think of a ton of organizational stuff I’d like to have and never use.

I could get junk from Ikea.

Or just junk from anywhere really.

The problem is that it’s most likely to be junk, whatever it is that I choose.

Junkish anyway.

Which makes me think I shouldn’t ask for anything.

Gah, why is this so hard?

It’s like Christmas!

In November!

Except Tara and I had to buy the gifts for ourselves, but we both got packages in the mail today.

Mine was s replacement sync/charging cable for my MP3 player. Which means I’ll find the original one any second now. But, to be honest, at a total cost of $6 for cable and shipping(yes, total of $6, from Hong Kong even) and I only ordered it about a week ago, so the shipping was even good.

Tara ordered some paper, I think it was the envelopes for the invitations. And I think she ordered them this week.

So it’s been a good time for the postal service…

I got nuthin

A loss

Tara got the sad news tonight that one of her cats had passed away.

The decline in health was sudden(last night) and tonight it was decided to put him down.

It’s been a very sad and emotional time for all involved, and I don’t think that it will pass anytime soon.

We become so attached to these little balls of fuzz and love, and it is such unconditional love.

I’ve lost two dogs in my lifetime, and it’s never easy, and never gets easier.

My heart goes out to them.

SideKick phone home

Since Tara changed jobs, she had to give back her blackberry. And the problem is that she used it all the time to call long distance(yes, this was totally allowed by her employer) to her mother and other friends.

But now she has no real way to do it other than to make a quick call on my cell and then get them to call her back. This isn’t helpful, so we broke down and got a land line.

We decided on a proper land line instead of vonage because vonage sucked, and we didn’t want the headache that entailed.

So we went with Primus because, for $50/month we got all the features we wanted and unlimited long distance.

It’s not connected yet, in fact I can’t remember when the connection date is supposed to be, but soon we’ll have a real land line to use.

And when that happens, I’ll make some adjustments to my cell plan to reduce it by about $20/month. Right now I just need the extra stuff on there, but when we get the line, I won’t.

And it’s also possible that Tara would carry it with her as she could give me a closer update as to when she’ll get to the bus stop. But right now, our timing is pretty good for that so we’ll see.

There’s no need for her to get a cell as, well, all she would do is call me, and I’m right here ;)

Tuesdays

People often say that Mondays are bad, but Tara and I are under the impression that Tuesdays are actually worse.

Yesterday was a long day at work, but at least it ended. This morning was a lot of scrambling looking for code and instructions and some misunderstanding on my side.

It was an evil morning.

But the afternoon was better.

Yesterday Tara thought she caught the flu, but it turns out it was just a ton of dust that had found it’s way into her. Nasty stuff that dust.

Todays update is brought to you by the letter C, for copout. ;)

Cat

We found out last week that our cat Ringo has diabetes.

I didn’t even know cats could get diabetes. But it would explain the sudden weight loss. He went from 17lb in May to 12.3lb just last week. So that’s a lot or weight to drop off in that time period for such a small animal.

We actually took him to the vet to get his tooth checked out, but apparently that’s the least of his problems.

We’re kinda beside ourselves right now, thinking that we had done all that the vets told us in terms of feeding, but apparently not. It seems that the dry kibble is the worst thing to give him as it’s high in carbs and lower in protein.

So we’ve taken him off that and just stuck him with the high protein wet food, and he’s eating it like there’s no tomorrow.

Also, we’ve started on twice a day insulin injections. I guess the main thing to watch out for is to not give too much. If in doubt, skip the injection. She had to make sure to stress this.

The insulin is the same stuff you give to people, as apparently it’s easier to come by. But we’re going to try and follow up with the vet next week.

So we’re going to set up a schedule to make sure that he’s not missing shots. This does mean that I’m working from home all the time now, and that’s fine by me.

The actual shots are pretty easy to give, so easy in fact that we’re not 100% sure we’re doing it right ;)

So we get to watch him a little closer now, feed him the good stuff more throughout the day, and it’s entirely possible that he’ll go into remission.

That would get great, and it’s the goal we’re going for.

Other than that, he’s a pretty normal cat :)

New Lappy…ish

It’s been some time, but I was finally able to get the work lappy reloaded.

For the longest time it’s been acting all sluggish and just annoying the hell out of me. It’s been acting this way since the day I nearly killed it.

See, what happened was that I closed the lid(as I am apt to do) and it didn’t go into standby mode, but blue screened. And for some reason, it bluescreened at 100% cpu.

Not knowing this, I stuffed it in my backpack and left it there for about an hour and a half as I went to work.

When I went to retrieve it from my backpack did I realise what had happened. And then nearly burned myself on the metal hinges!

It’s been acting a little wonky ever since.

The tech guys had some fun with this. What should have taken about 2 hours took the better part of a full day. They had to replace the hard drive and the ram.

But now it’s reloaded, all clean like, and working probably better than ever. The screen resolution is better, and smaller, which is a little worse.

Fine for when I’m in the kitchen, but not so much at work.

And of course I spent hours loading it with non-work related crap, but it’s good crap.

Crap like Samurize. Which is a neat little app that will display text docs as a background. Actually kind of helpful.

And fences. Fences rocks for people like me that keep everything on the desktop. Squares it away into nice little packages.

And I’ve also installed things to allow me to catch up on podcasts. Very helpful when working.

They still need to replace the fan in this thing, but other than that it’s a good little work station again.

Day 1

Today marks the start of NaBloPoMo for 2009.

My updates have been, at best, weekly, and at worst….not weekly.

I’m going to see if NaBloPoMo can jumpstart my blogging again :)

I have no plan, no theme, no goals other than to blog daily for this month.

So consider this the kick off and I’ll give some weekend updates tomorrow :)
