And the winner is….

Drum roll please…..

An XBOX 360!

Yes, that’s the decision that was kinda made for me as a birthday gift.

This year I had a really hard time deciding on what I wanted, because, for the most part, the price point was high enough that there was a ton of stuff that fit into it, and I couldn’t make up my mind to save my life.

So we put everything into a hat, and I chose, and whatever I chose I had to accept. So it’s the xbox.

The advantage here is that I have a few friends with xboxes and I can borrow their games πŸ™‚

Also, it’ll act as a media center so I don’t need a big ugly computer sitting down there.

Now to go and find a good deal on the xbox and I’ll be golden.

Right now Dell has the Pro system going for $330, and that includes an extra controller. Both wireless, so that’s cool πŸ™‚

Now to see how to stream video to it. But it can’t be that hard….right?

More Vacation

Today was mostly spent talking to old friends of Tara(really good folk) and helping Tara’s friend setup for their wedding.

I have to admit that paying someone else to do it is totally worth it.

It’s included in our wedding package, so yea, it costs but it’s looking to be worth it.

I’ve helped setup for a couple of weddings, and all it takes is a few A types in there to make things a little chaotic. But I have to admit it all looks good and I suspect it’ll go off like clockwork tomorrow.

I passed the test with all of Tara’s friends, which is a releif as I’ve been studying hard. πŸ˜‰

On Vacation

Tara and I left for Vancouver yesterday at about 10:15 and arrived at 1 something Vancouver time.

The flight itself was pretty good. WestJet is nice as it has the leather seats and sat tv, but I was listening to podcasts and random music.

Tara slept most of the trip, which is unusual for her as she has a hard time sleeping while travelling. But it’s been a long couple of weeks for us both with work and whatnot, so I think she found the will to sleep πŸ˜‰

We arrived after getting our rental and pretty much napped for a couple of hours. It was a long day afterall πŸ™‚

After some chinese food we took a trip to White Rock and walked along the peer there. It was a really nice night and the temp was nice and cool.

Tara tells me that the whole area has been built up quite a bit and there’s more and more places to buy things. Apparently Surry has about a million people now, which seems just huge for the actual amount of space that seems to be available.

We have a busy week ahead of us. Today is lunch with old friends of Tara, then helping her friend set up the wedding hall. Tomorrow is the wedding, Sunday we’re puttering around. Monday should be quiet, but that could change. Tuesday we’re puttering and then seeing my aunt and uncle, and I can’t remember what we’re doing on Wednesday.

I might also go see Terminator on Monday with Tara’s brother.

Apparently he can’t get anyone else to go with him πŸ˜€

Updates and Trek

It was a rather busy weekend all told.

Friday around 5pm Tara and I left for St Catharines so that we could go visit her grandfather and pick up her mother.

We arrived around 11 or so, so that wasn’t too bad. The weather on the way down was mostly awful. There were points where it was raining so hard you couldn’t see in front of you more than 5 feet.

And of course there were the jackasses that didn’t have their lights on during that time.

The visit was really nice as I hadn’t met Taras granddad before this.Β  He’s a nice guy that likes to tell stories. Which is great, because I like to listen to them πŸ™‚

And I met one of Tara’s uncles. Also a nice guy with plenty to say.

We brought the dog with us and she was a big hit. She was also spoiled way too much. Bits of doughnut, cheese, spaghetti and a container of meat sauce(this she helped herself too).

I’m really surprised that the trip back wasn’t worse, with all that in her, I wasn’t sure how long it would stay in her πŸ˜‰

I attended my first Catholic mass on Saturday. I really felt out of place. For me, church has an order of service so I can at least know what’s coming up next.

No, not here, you’re just expected to know. And I didn’t, but that’s ok.

The trip back was nice and we got home around 3am. We just had a lot of stuff to try to do today as we’re flying out to Vancouver on Thursday, so every prep-day helps πŸ™‚

Sunday was busy but I think we were all pretty tired.

Today is back to work day, and Tara brought her Mom to work as they’re getting their hair done sometime today.

Dad and I are going to try and go see Star Trek tonight at the iMax. I say try because it’s at 7 and I work until 5. It could be too busy, but it would be pretty sweet to see it on the huge screen.

It feels really right to go see Trek with my Dad. He got me into it when I was a wee lad and we both enjoyed it as I grew up. I remember when Next Generation started and we were both there for the first episode and talked about it for some time afterwords.

The same with DS9 and Voyager. I think I was living away from how for the start of Enterprise, but if I wasn’t, we’d have watched that together as well.

I’ve read online that this isn’t “your fathers Star Trek’, but Scott Kurtz from PVP put it nicely:

Make no mistake though, the reason you’ll love this movie is the same reason my dad loved the original. β€œBecause they’re friends.”

So I’m really looking forward to this tonight. I’ll try to tell you all how it was without ruining anything πŸ™‚

Fun with Stats

So the site has been running for just a little over a month, and right from the beginning I signed up for Google Analytics.

Guess I just like looking at stats πŸ™‚

So here’s some fun stat stuff. Keep in mind that these are slightly skewed as it also counts me checking my own site.

I’ve had 200 visitors since April 1st, and of those 200:

1. Browsers

  • 99 are using IE
  • 83 are using FireFox
  • 10 on Safari
  • 7 on Chrome
  • and 1 using Opera

2. OSes

  • 175 on Windows
  • 11 on Linux
  • 8 on Macs
  • 5 on the iPod(I suspect most of these are my brother with his fancy shmancy iPod Touch(yes, partially jealous))

3. Screen Resolutions

  • Most are using 1280 x 1024
  • Next is 1680 x 1050(again, I suspect a lot of this is me)
  • in fact only one below 1024, and that’s 320 x 396

4. Visitor Locations

  • 189 from Canada (no great surprise)
  • 8 from the US(kinda surprised)
  • and 1 each from Spain, New Zealand and Hong Kong. I would say surprised/happy, but I also had three spam comments…so you know πŸ˜‰

5. Referring Sites

6. Top google search phrases

  • “getting there japanese”
  • canadian sidekick
  • sidekick canada

It’s fun to see how many hits I’m getting and from where.

Traffic spiked on the 17th and the 24th.Β  I think this is when I started tweeting my updates into facebook. They were also double post days, so that could have done it as well.

So fun to watch. Maybe not for someone that’s not me, but I still cool that Google can log all of this πŸ™‚

Gift Decisions

For awhile now I’ve been thinking of what I want for my birthday.

Tara kinda kicked this off with the suggestion of another dog, and I think we ran with that for a little while.

Then the cons started to pile up faster than the pros.

Don’t get me wrong, the idea of having another dog is totally awesome in most respects and is not off the table, it’s just not really feasable at this point in time. There was a lot more to consider than just having a dog, there were things like:

-food and vet expenses

-crate training

-general training(because I’ve done such a bang up job with Quanuk)

-how Quanuk and Ringo would adapt(I suspect one would be more open than the other πŸ˜‰ )

And a few other things, so it’s off the main table but still an option for the future.

So now I have to think of something else, and I kinda suck at it. I generally don’t ask for big things as, well, I don’t want people to spend a lot.

The problem is that I’ve gone into this psudo-pragmatic mode over the last little while. I say psudo as I look at the wall of toys behind me, but I really haven’t gotten anything new in a long time.

It’s just that I have a lot of other things that I want to save for and spend money on later that are a lot more important than a birthday gift.

I was playing with my brothers iPod Touch and it’s cool and affordable, but I have a perfectly good 4gig MP3 player that I already don’t use that much πŸ˜‰

I was thinking of a nice little ACER netbook…but really have no use for it other than having one.

Tara joked about a PVR…we don’t have cable πŸ˜›

I could get a few new toys, but that’s what Anime North is for.

I mean, how hard is it for me to find something in a certain price range and ask for it? Apparently, really hard.

In all honesty, the one thing that I think would be best is a new bike. I mean, the one I got from my Dad is fully working, but it’s a little heavy and starting to wear a lot.

So maybe a new bike. I mean, I’d be using it every day, so at least that’s something. But I don’t think it would have the ‘new toy’ feeling. Mind you, that feeling is pretty fleeting.

And the netbook would be cool for Anime North….or the iPod for that matter.
