Day: July 6, 2009

Golf 2

It was an early day but we hit the links (I think that’s what you call it) at 8:20.

We were joined by another guy so that it made a 4some, which wasn’t too bad as he was a nice enough guy, full of jokes and generally good disposition.

My first ball strike went about 30 feet, and mostly to the right. It was not a good start to the day.

I had spent part of the previous day looking at golf videos to see about grip and stance, and I think those are improving, but I just have to practice.

I have to say that by the 11th hole my game was improving. I was hitting more and more of the ball, and it was going rather well actually. We were playing best ball, and mine was actually the best at one point 😀

But then it kinda fell apart again around the 15th hole, so it was nice while it lasted.

Golf is one one of those things you really have to practice at to get better. And playing once a year(or less) is not a lot of practice.

It’s funny to think this, but I really start to think that the more I know about things, the worse I get at them. Let me go into a little more detail about this:

What I mean by things are things that require learning a technique and sticking to that technique in order to improve. Where I notice this the most is 1-on-1 fighting games. When I start fresh, I just get lucky and do rather well. I’m a button masher. But then I start to notice that I’m doing more complicated moves, and start learning moves, and generally get much worse overall.

The same with golf. When I started playing, I just kinda went with my gut, and didn’t do too badly. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t Tiger Woods, but I was generally better than I am now.

I think it comes down to thinking too much and worrying too much about what I’m doing. When I was getting better yesterday, I wasn’t worrying so much about what I wanted to do, but just kinda went ahead and did it. Then I started thinking about my not thinking and how good an idea that was…and it went downhill again 😉

I guess it’s also about getting comfortable enough with something that you don’t actually have to over think the situation and just act. All well and good to say it, but I have to figure out how to do it.

The whole game lasted about 4 hours, which is about 2 hours longer than I thought it would. And it was a nice sunny day so I’m a little crisp today. I have this spray on sunscreen which I think is more hairspray than anything, so I won’t be using it any longer.

Excellent day out with my Dad and brother and I should really practice more often so I at least look like I know what I’m doing 😉
