Sooo close
Still fighting with Ubuntu and graphic stuff.
Here’s what I wanted to do:
-use the new compiz graphic enhancements
-play City of Heroes
When I install Cedega and do the test, I get all green.
But I can’t use compiz.
When I install the glx drivers, I get compiz, but not OpenGL(which is needed for COH).
Huh.
After bashing around on the interwebs, I find that the proprietary drivers from ATI will allow me to do both.
Actually, I don’t think that’s said anywhere, I was just hoping.
Turns out I was right, and it does allow me to do both.
For those wanting to do it, go here: http://ubuntero.org/cochise/weblog/718.html
He lists a slightly outdated driver.
I tried the latest, it’s poopy. I tried this one, and it’s great.
One slight snag….COH seems to crash the instant I try to do anything.
SO CLOSE!!!!
I still don’t think I should just through so many hoops just to get this stuff to work.
But to be honest, what I’m trying to do is use a bunch of third party stuff and get them all to agree on things.
That’s just never easy.

Rock on!
(I’d start the wave, but I’m going to bed…)
Just think, in a perfect world, there’d be no hoops… only freely flowing electrons you could bend to your will… (Until then… )
Best of luck!
Speaking as a systems and network administrator, who relies on Linux to, well, do pretty much everything..just install Windows, dude. Right tool for the right job and all that.
–Centurion, just waiting for a Linux-based router to reboot. OSPF is so wonderful, yet so very, very wrong.
But if I did that, how else would I drive myself slowly mad with computers? 😉
For the record, I’ve pretty much given up on Compiz. It doesn’t work on my desktop machine, and I know that while it might work on my new laptop (whenever I get it), it will mean my webcam won’t work.
I don’t care about wobbly windows that much…
Sadly I have to agree with Cent. All of this just to play CoH? Mind you, I didn’t play a FPS for 3 years until I got my 360. That being said, when running XP my system kept going tits up so I wouldn’t have been playing games anyways.
Have you tried Linux Mint or Mandriva lately? There are a couple of other distros that may support your hardware better and if you’re going to be reinstalling anyways…
BTW Compiz is great for the first week or so, then you stop using it – at least I did. Honestly, the spinning cube really just becomes bothersome after a while. and while it’s fun to watch your windows go up in flames it doesn’t do that much for the experience.
BTW is this on your Sempron or your laptop?
Let’s be honest here.
If I didn’t bitch about this, I’d have to find something else. At least with this it’s something we all have in common 😛
Oh I know. I suspect that I’ll get bored of 90% of compiz within the first few hours.
And if it was just for COH, I had that working just fine in 7.04. I’m more curious than anything now 🙂
And it’s the Semp.
Mind you, it did totally crash in windows tonight.
