I finished watching Godzilla vs Megaguirus this morning, and I have to say it was a much better Godzilla movie than 2000 was. It didn’t try to compete with the American one, it was just plain old Godzilla fun.
Now, that’s not to say that there wasn’t any computer graphics or newish special effects, because there were, they were just done more smoothly and didn’t look quite so obvious.They’re also not paying attention to continuity this time around. It’s assumed that the original movie happened, and then they explain what has happened between that time and the current movie, making no references to any other Godzilla movie.
Not a bad idea, releases them from a whole lot of fiddly details. I think the next one will be done in the same manner, and I say this because that’s how 2000 was done as well.And yes, there was some continuity. In the first series(1955-1979), there was a monster called Godzilla, but he was a hero of Tokyo and sought to protect it from the onslaught of evil monsters. He even lived in peace on Monster island with his son and a host of other happy monsters.
The second series(1985-1995) was pretty much a continuing story line with each movie making references to the previous ones(something that didn’t happen in the first series). This was closer to the original in that he was a nasty beast that wanted to destroy nuclear energy. A very environmental type series(almost gets nauseating at times). This time the Japanese government is trying to get rid of him.
The second series also assumes that nothing from the first series ever happened.I liked it.
Think I might watch Godzilla, King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Baragon – Giant Monsters All Out Attack tonight. That should be fun.
