About
Who am I?
My name is Bill and I’m an addict.
Wait, wrong group.
I’ve been online pretty much since mid-late 1995, and blogging(sorta) since 1999. Back then I wasn’t using any fancy software and just had to update the page manually everytime.
Then, in 2001, I did something that violated the web provider I was using, and they deleted my site in one stroke. No warning, no nothing.
But I’m not bitter.
I then started to use my own server when high speed was easily available.
Still manually updating, but then I found some early blogging software, GreyMatter, which is still in use today.
That was using perl and, since I knew perl, was easy enough for me to use and configure. It also did archives, which I thought was a pretty nifty concept.
Can’t remember when I made the switch to PHP, but it was a good day 🙂
I basically wrote my own blogging software that did proper X amount of days on the main page, archiving and cross-posting into a forum(which I also ran).
And for the most part, having all of this run on a little Linux box, the world was good.
Then my server kept crashing, and I got hit with spammers. This must have been around 2005, for that’s when I made the big move to Live Journal, and I’ve stayed there ever since.
And now, with proper hosting space, I bring back my personal website.
I guess it’s more of a blog with little extras thrown in. I suspect the extras are going to be the fun tinkering bits that I like to play with. Not a lot of useful function, just kinda fun 🙂
And about me you ask?
Well, I live in Kanata (burb of Ottawa) with my lovely wife, my dog and our cat.
I work for IBM and enjoy things like anime (from time to time, less these days), toys, video games, horror movies, and random other stuff that would be too long to list here.
So enjoy the site, wander about if you like, leave some comments, and generally have a good time.
Thanks!
