Panic…..
OK, what is it with the beginning of the week and sucking?
I swear, if it was a Monday today I would have given up all hope and gone back to bed!So, the boss calls me into her office to talk. Not about what I’ve been working on(because that’s what I expected).
She looks me straight in the eye and says:
‘Are you happy here?’
That’s it, I’m dead. Here it comes, the moment we’ve been waiting for. All joking aside, I was really gonna get fired!
My heart started racing and so did my mind. I was quickly going over all the GOOD things that I’ve done in the past few weeks, going over what I should say, how I should act…
‘Yes, I am happy here…’
‘Are you really really happy?’
‘Ummm…yea?’
‘Because you know, al you guys being contractors, we don’t really have the money to keep you on past the contract date…’
Crap, I knew it, she was asking me to leave. WHY?!?!? What have I done wrong recently!!!! WHY DON’T YOU LIKE ME!?!?!?
‘We’re planning on expanding the customer service center (currently one guy) and I was wondering if you would like to go for that?’
That’s not what I heard. What I heard through the panicky haze and the blood pounding in my ears was:
‘Wonk wonk, wonk wonk wonk fired.’
But some small part of my brain, the part I call Evil (because it’s the only part paying ANY attention) figures out what was said, and this time decides to relay it to the other 99%.
‘What?’
‘Would you like to move over customer service, as a full-time employee?’
‘Sure.’
Yea sure, that’s all I could think of.
After all that, after all the sweating, the near loss of bowel control, all I could pipe up was ‘Sure’.So, nothing’s carved in stone. I still have to go through the formal interview process and all that, not to mention the other two contractors were offered (or are about to be) the same position.
It’s not testing, and it might be more ‘fun’ than what I’m doing now.
Give it a shot, what’s the worst that could happen…FIRED!
