Working Kitchen
It’s been roughly one week since I started working from the kitchen.
The last two days I’ve spent the whole day here, and before that it was just the afternoons.
Monday is an exception as I had time off, so I worked in the office and then did nuthin 🙂
I have to say that I think I’m liking this whole kitchen office thing. There’s way less distraction here and I can focus on work when the work is there to focus on.
That’s part of the trick I guess. If I’m not 100% busy, then I drift. But with the kitchen, it’s really easy to drift back. I think I need that.
That, and the real distraction is up stairs, so I have to get up and go, and with a dodgy laptop, I might not always hear the instant message pings, so I never stray for long. That’s also good.
Upstairs has become an ‘out of sight out of mind’ kinda place, so I really don’t think of going up there.
The odd part is that I hardly spend any time in that room anymore.
Now, because the main system is up stairs, I’ve had to make some changes. Normally I would listen to music or podcasts, and I suppose I could just copy them down locally, but that would be too easy and oddly inconvenient.
So I stream. Which is easy with Winamp and Shoutcast, but controlling that stream isn’t as easy. So I installed this plug-in WAWI(WinAmp Web Interface) which allows me to control winamp(most of it) via a browser.
It’s not perfect, but it’s better than nothing. I think I have to set up proper playlists or something. I can browse to other locations on my hard drive, but can’t always play the files because of odd file names or some other reason.
Now, I’m sure some of you are thinking;Â Why isn’t he using VNC or something like it.
For some reason it’s not working so I had to do something else. Not sure what the problem is, but I’m sure I’ll sort it out.
I still don’t like using my laptop to run the VM images, but it’s better than nothing. And until I can get VNC working again, it’s all I got. The machines at work are decent, but it’s either a slow connection or slow computers, running the vm images there is just mostly painful.
Could be that I just need my laptop reloaded, and I’m in the process of getting that done, it just takes time to schedule I guess.
I like the wooden chairs in the kitchen. It keeps me conscious as to my slouching, which has become worse and worse.
And I’m keeping the kitchen cleaner, at least for now. I have to do something while things take forever to load 😉
I’ve also started a tea time thing. Sure, it’s been two whole days, but still, I like the idea.
A little light snack, mostly cheese and some pickles, with good tea. Tried the tetly red tea today, and the first cup wasn’t great as it wasn’t steeped enough, but the second cup is better.
I’m going to keep this up and see how long I can hack it. Tara has a new job starting Monday and the hours are a little earlier, so getting her to the bus on time might mean I start work at 8 or earlier. Not that I mind, with any luck that means I’m off earlier as well 😀
I’ll keep you all posted. I’m sure you’re at the edge of your seats with anticipation 😛
Consider me on the edge of my seat!
You’re livin’ the dream man! 🙂
Seriously, sounds like it’s working out well.
Best of luck!
(And do keep us posted! 🙂 )
Funny you say that. For the longest time the major requirements for my “dream job” were:
-be able to work in shorts
-be able to work in sandles
Working from the kitchen is just icing at this point 😉
